dreaming up summer

homeschooling themes: Da Vinci,

Water, Bugs, what else???

.

I don’t think we’ll be doing camp for Penny this summer but I don’t want to get caught up in a rut of still being in jammies at 10 am. So I thought… home school summer camp! The teacher in me is already thinking up themes. Definitely a Da Vinci week. Then some summer/ nature themes. I’d love to do a country as well as some local NH themes. Not sure what else. Any ideas?

France would be an easy country to do. Croissants. French bread. French fries. All things I’m sure she’d love to eat! French flag made out of berries.

How about fortune cookies? Surely there is a theme in there. Start collecting fortunes and make art projects or books out of them.

What about Spanish? Learn new words or phrases each week and make a big poster of all the S

Okay, I think I have it figured out. Thank you for the ideas, Kelly! Each week, we will study a different artist. This will open up the content to culture/ language, cooking, science, etc. I think Degas will be the French component. Penny just loves ballet so I think this will inspire her. Trips to the ballet, Boston Museum, science museums, etc. Georgia O’Keefe for a Southwestern unit which I will love doing since I lived out there. Faith Ringold who is a contemporary quilter. I’ll start teaching Penny how to sew! Jessica Stockholder, Louise Nevelson and Jackson Pollock for the modern/ contemporary NYC component. I’m very excited to do this! As Penny starts big school next year I imagine it’s the beginning of a super packed in schedule. So this may be my one chance to bring out the teacher in me just for her :)

Singing! Get her to learn the intervals. Ear training is then good later with an instrument or a choral society.

DGale, Penny is extremely musical but unfortunately I am not. I wouldn’t even know where to begin…

A CD with interval practice. A very basic sing along book.

Absolutely. Home schooling and most other teaching is teaching the teacher as well.
