a very nice haiku, alison.
isn’t it great to write unfettered by the traditional count? it chases out the often- contrived extra syllables. i enjoy the barest, bare bones!

Thanks everyone! Yes, I think this is my first shorter haiku. And Gisele, I used your advice -I initially composed this as a longer haiku and then thought it would be a good one to experiment with paring it down.
