six degrees outside

I’m peeing in an alley

Hubby standing guard

And I must say — the air wasn’t as cold on my private parts as I was dreading it to be! However, it’s possible I was just so relieved to be going that I didn’t even really register the cold! This must make me a true Minnesota girl!

I wanted those old

disagreements to die with

the year — they didn’t.

This haiku is personal. Today, on the first day of the year, I found myself struggling to hold back bitter words over arguments that Hubby and I have been having for months — his video gaming and where we should concentrate our house hunting efforts. Argh!

Yet as I sat down to type up this haiku, it struck me that these words are equally fitting in regards to the “fiscal cliff” debacle — which is almost as annoying as my reoccurring arguments with Hubby.

One bad habit I am vowing to break with from this past year, however, is my lackadaisical approach to this very blog, which overtook me last spring when I became a mom.

Seeing as how Haiku By Two began as a New Year’s Resolution on January 1, 2009, it seemed fitting that if I wanted to renew my haiku’ing muscle, then I should start doing so on the first day of the year. And so, here goes.

May the habit of haiku overtake me once again!

“Then we’d all compete

somewhere in between

scrubbing pots and folding laundry

she breaks down in tears

he doesn’t notice

his head in a video game

his wife’s frustration

I composed this haiku couplet many weeks ago. It felt so true to my experience of new motherhood at that moment in time that I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote it down. And yet, as it reveals my utter exhaustion and angst, I never found the time to post it until now.

At the time that I was living it, and right now as I’m posting it, I’m thinking of you, dear Alison, my haiku partner. I just know you will relate to in in your bones.

And even now, weeks later, as I type it up here and reread it, I too have a visceral reaction to it. It makes me angry and sad and angry again as–unfortunately–too often these feelings bubble up when I’m chopping vegetables or folding laundry. Will the laundry ever go away?

Please don’t answer that question. I already know the answer.
