the flowering crabs
pop as a tornado hits –
beauty is short lived

Mother’s Day as a non-mom?

the magnolia
next door suddenly full blown —

perhaps that black bird
at the top of the pine tree
has haiku to share

.
we sit and wait
watching soap and snow melt
against the windshield
.
suddenly it’s dusk
and yet it took forever
to get to this car
.
driving we see things
that aren’t ourselves -
windows lit soft orange
.
trees hang with white
so comfortably as if
they were penciled in
.
Finally people
surround us and we eat
tasting everything
.

the deep dark forest beyond -

Outside the wind whirls.
Inside my daughter asleep
in her toddler bed.
.
When will the world be
good enough for our children?
The night crashes rain.
The morning is calm.
A young Oak still holds it’s leaves
strong against winter.

On the way…
Sunday morning drive
wispy leafless trees pass us -
we watch quietly
.
We get there…
my child covered in
chocolate - a grandmother
scowls hard at us both
.
Our way home…
“She must be from Mass.”
I complain as we walk past
hardy Marigolds
